Where is the default derby home where one can place a derby.properties file in b41 when issuing the
asadmin start-database command?

Expanding my earlier reply, you should be able to place the derby.properties file in any directory as long as you specify this directory in --dbhome option to start-database command. However, you cannot set the following properties:
derby.drda.portNumber
derby.drda.host
To modify the host and port, you'll need to use --dbhost and --dbport options in start-database command.

Hope this is clear.

If you don't specify --dbhome option, then the current directory where you invoke start-database command is the derby home directory.
Correction to amithanda's post, derby is located in Glassfish_Home/javadb in b41.

The default derby home is Glassfish_Home/derby.

Check whether while installing you had DERBY_INSTALL or DERBY_HOME set. If that is the case i.e. it is set, you can run the derby scripts without doing anything.

the default derby home is the current directory. when using start-database command, you may want to use --dbhome option to change the derby home.
