Hello LG3Ders,

We've been making major updates in a previous document, and the updated version has finally posted:

o Project Looking Glass - A Comprehensive Overview of the Technology (PDF 1.4MB)
. . . https://lg3d-core.dev.java.net/files/documents/1834/30923/LG3D-Overview.pdf

It covers most of the major aspects of LG3D, except the X Integration. Hopefully it gives you a good high level understanding of the technology.

Comments are welcome! If you are ever interested in translating the document into your native language, that would be wonderful! Please let me know in that case.

Hi, Paulby,

I've finished the first version of the translation. I tried to make the format same as the original one. Also I add an additional section 8 which including terms translation table for translators. When necessary, I can revise it.

Both odt version and pdf version are available. The odt file was created by staroffice 8 on SXDE 55b and then exported to pdf file. One problem is that the format will be weird if you don't open the odt file in zh_GBK locale.

How can I give it to you? Can I attach it to any post here on this forum? If I can, how to do that? I'll try to send email to you.

Thanks.

Hello Hideya,

I am Geish's team-mate (we are 6 in total) in this project. I have been contacting Paul Byrne through email for quite a while, but I am sure we will use these forums for future discussions and issues. We have plenty of things to ask about, you may rest assured. We will start peppering you with nasty questions this week.

I suggest however that you further divide the categories available (e.g an LG3D application development forum ) since this is far beyond "interest".

Hello Geish and Ahmed,

Thanks for the updates, Geish. Glad to know that you folks have formed a team of 6 members!

As you may have realized already, Paul worked with Charlie to achieve the NetBeans integration. Paul is on vacation right now, but will be back the middle of next week (that's why you don't see any reply from him, in case you folks are wondering).

We are hearing input that it is very useful to provide this capability of letting developers to embed LG3D window inside JavaSE apps, and are considering providing better framework. It should help you folks too.

> but I am sure we will use these forums for future discussions and issues.

That would be great! ;-) In that way, we can share with and archive the info for the other community members.

Yeah, this request pops up occasionally, but considering the current number of posts in this forum, I'm afraid that it will weaken our unity if we split the forum... What do you think?

You'res probably right. I guess if our topic messages get too many you could create a new sub-forum and move them there later.

Before sending in our questions, we are wondering about one important thing: when is the new 0.8x documentation coming out? A lot of the classes we are most interested in have very little/no documentation! We are guessing usage scenarios and doing trial & error far too much, even though we have your sample code.

Cheers

Sorry for the inconvenience, we couldn't make good progress in API documentation side in 0.8.x (we did improved the installation side). We know that documentation is weak, and it is something we need help from the community. It would be great if you could help us on enriching development documentation, including Javadoc and Wiki pages:

http://wiki.java.net/bin/view/Javadesktop/ApplicationDevelopment

Is anyone in the community willing to help us out?

At this moment, one good way to find out API usage is to search the source and see how those methods are used in LG3D (core and incubator).

Please don't hesitate to send us your questions to the forum before spending too much time by yourself, though (after searching the source and the forum for usage).

I´m very interested about doing a translation to portuguese.
I´m ready to start as soon as you send me the document.
I´m thinking also about translating the whole site, but

Hi smuramoto,

Thanks for your willingness to help out the project!

Sounds great! I know lots of keen Java developers in Brazil. They will appreciate your work!

> I´m ready to start as soon as you send me the document.

I'll send the document soon. Could I send it to your java.net email account? (it is in OpenOffice format and less than 1MB).

> I´m thinking also about translating the whole site, but

This is also great. Since we are discussing to update our web pages, so I think it is a good idea for you to work on the overview document first. Once the site is updated, it would be great if you could continuously help us for the translation.

Thanks again for your kindness!

Good news to Portuguese-speaking LG3D'ers!

Sandro (smuramoto) has finished translation of the overview document! It is available at:

https://lg3d-core.dev.java.net/files/documents/1834/34814/LG3D-Overview-...

Big thanks to Sandro for his great contribution! :) :) :)
I'm sure it must have been very much time consuming...

For those who are kindly working on translation,
please ping me when you finish or you have any questions!

Thank you!

Well, thanks for your support. We are currently in the design phase and we are trying to work with NetBeans modules and LG3D applications so that we can determine the classes we are going to use and to figure out how would the design look like. The big issue that we are facing now is how to make LG run inside NB, just like Charlie did. So, if we knew how is this possible, we would start working on it now. Thanks in advance.

Hello,

alihelmy informed me that he know two people who can translate the document French and German.

avaughan, would you mind to send an email to alihelmy and find out how to collaborate with one of his friend?

Is there any one who has German skill and would like to collaborate with the other person?

alihelmy, would you please share the source of the document with both of the folks? And ask the one who does French translation to make a contact with avaughan?

Thanks,

Hi avaughan and Opsi,

OK, I've just sent the source to both of you folks. It is large (because of the images) but less than 1MB. So, should be fine.

Please note that I'm not an expert of OO Writer. I know I'm doing stupid things in the document. Please let me know if realized things we can improve the document (and please bear with my unsophisticated usage!).

I especially had hard time to position figures and tables at a reasonable position. It easily gets screwed up. There must be a good way than what I'm doing in order to position them, but I couldn't figure it out... (I miss TeX, which I don't have a chance to use any more...)

Hope the translation work does not cause too many troubles on your side. Please let me know if you have any question about the doc.

Thanks again,

Thank you very much for volunteering! :) I'll send the source to you shortly. By the way, Radek (== Radosław Kierner == radeczka) informed me that he has translated (a part of?) the previous document into Polish. I pinged him to see if he has time to cooperate with you. This new and the previous document shares the first half, so I suggest you to start translating Sections 5 and 6, then Section 4. Sections 1, 2, 3 are very similar to the previous version, which Radek might have translated into Polish already.

Hi all, paul, hideya.

I saw the portuguese version of the overview document. I know that it can be improved, although is good right now. But portuguese is one of my strong sides, so I think this document can be enhanced. Doing so, as a proud member of many discussion forums here in Brasil, I can share this document and invite many good developers to join the project and spread it around here. Please send me the original ones or the portuguese version in a editable format. I can just copy the PDF here and write a new one in .doc format, then send you the file if you think better.

Cya.

Or .odt would be even better...

Thanks for your willingness to help out the project! This project has been very quiet for too long. I hate to say but my personal situation don't allow me to spend time on this at the moment (and sadly for a while). So, it is really helpful if you and your friends could take leadership to improve any aspect of this project...

Getting back to your original request -- I put the original and PtBr ODT files in the lg3d-core>docs folder (bad me, forgetting to put them there until now!):

https://lg3d-core.dev.java.net/servlets/ProjectDocumentList?collapseFold...

Once you update the documents, please discuss it in the forum, and update appropriate PDF file once you folks (who can read Portuguese) reached reasonable consensus. Please upload the updated ODT file there too (be careful not to overwrite the previous version, rather please create a new file there).

Best,

Ok then..odt will be better. I´m starting today at night (now is 13:37 here). Sure it will be done tomorrow, as I´m just making a revision of it. Between this, I can translate not only the overview document, but any file you want, including help-files (if any). I was thinking in a better idea. I will talk to my friends here and try to make a mirror-forum of the project, so the most important discussions will take place in portuguese too. Just an idea, let´s see if we can do it. Cya and go-go LG3D!

What do you think?

Sure it can be done. Starting today, probably this week it will be done.

The Overview document is updated, changed a little things ´cause portuguese has singularities that english hasn´t, but the overall document was left untouched.

I started to learn Java past month, but my skills is waaayyyy too low to make anything that worth the time for the project (I know only C... even C++ is hard to me. I don´t mind, but OOP is not for me...). I´m making a distro of Linux here with LG3D as the standard window manager, when ready I will link here if you want, and link to all the pages I have access.

Thank you very much for the chance. I feel as I´m among stars (Sun?). hehe

EDIT: Oh-oh! I overwrited the previous versions of the .odt. Forgot this detail... can you please re-upload the previous version of it hideya? Sorry for the mistake... The PDF file will be left untouched until my friends say it´s fine.

Persian and Indonesian translations would be great. To get started you need to sign and submit the JCA here https://lg3d.dev.java.net/contribute.html and then apply for Content Developer role for the lg3d project. While this in process start your translations so once the project role is granted you can upload your work.

Thanks

Because the site is completely in English, maybe it would be a good idea to write links to the translated documents in native languages, e.g.:

Project Looking Glass - A Comprehensive Overview of the Technology (PDF 1.6MB)

>>>>Polskie tłumaczenie - PL (PDF 980KB)

It would be easier for non-English speakers to find these documents.

Hello people,
I just want to let you know about a program I discovered just a few
days ago that is very helpfull in the process of translating a document.
This program allows to work with ".odt" files directly, and divide them
in "segments"(phrases) to simplify translation (and it's made in Java).
I recommend all translators to try it, if you are like me, you will love
it ;) .With no more ado here is the URL :

This is great! Yes, we are also talking with folks in Egypt about some graduation project. I'm pretty sure that your translation helps lots of Linux users over there.

This is also very helpful. And, if you find any opportunity to present the technology in your country (like Linux User Group conferences, Open Source related conferences, Java related conferences), please post the info. If you or your friend could present LG3D there, it would be wonderful :)

Perhaps we should put the source of the document and source of all the translations into CVS. It should make it much easier to manage changes over time. It might also be a good idea to break the document into a number of files, this would allow multiple people to work concurrently without merge issues.
