The Mustang beta license says this:

6.4 Upon termination or expiration of this Agreement, Licensee will immediately cease use of and destroy Licensed Software, any copies thereof and provide to Sun a written statement certifying that Licensee has complied with the foregoing obligations.

Please take out the part about us having to notify Sun in writing to certify that we're no longer using the beta. That's just silly, no one is going to do it, you don't even give an address. Just take it out, and shoot any lawyers that get in your way if you have to ;)

The beta license on the web has been updated. Thanks for your patience and understanding. See http://java.sun.com/javase/6/jdk-6-beta-license.txt.

So what happened?
Basically, we got bitten by our boilerplate. A couple of provisions that made perfect sense for different software and a different distribution model were inadvertently carried over to the current license. When the issues identified by the developer community were brought to our attention, we moved as quickly as we could to make the necessary changes.

Now before we get taken through the wringer again, you will find that Sun did not change the license in the download package. Why? Because it will take time and effort away from several people who should be working on more essential things (like making Mustang a better release).

When you download the software from a website where the new license is posted (see link above), the new terms will control. We don't want your termination notices and we understand that the terms of the license cannot be confidential after it's publicly posted. So there's no need to be concerned. Please.

For beta 2 we'll use the new license throughout. I promise.

Yes, we goofed.... thanks for pointing it out. We're working on the corrections now and hope to have a new license up in a day or two.

Thanks, Ray!
Be sure to change the click-thru text as well as any places the license may appear on the website.
