One more point on this: porting JXTA Messenger from Wilson's examples is work, but not that much work. Most of the code ports to the new API without modification.

But along the way, while you eliminate one 'unknown symbol' after another, you will pass almost every significant construct in JXTA. His Messenger reference app contains almost one of everything you will find in the platform API.

Again, time well spent with a real app, troubleshooting real build problems. Worth every penny.

Brendon Wilson's book on JXTA is really quite good. I faced the same problem you did, and solved it by porting Wilson's JXTA Messenger app to the modern JXTA APIs. It took a week of heads down study, but it was well worth it. JXTA requires this level of attention if you intend to master it.

Wilson's source code is available on his website, brendonwilson.com
