Is there going to be a binary and/or source release for the Java plugin for Firefox or IE 64-bit?
I suppose it would be too difficult for a company as big as SUn to assign someone to the task of porting Web Start and the browser plugins to x64. It would probably take a seasoned Java coder a few hours with access to the source code.
The source for both, Webstart and the Plugin (however not Plugin2) are accessible - so anybody interested enough in that task could simply go out and do it "in a few hours".
There are currently no definite plans for a 64-bit version of plugin due to lack of demand. The issue will be reassessed as market demand changes and will be considered in a future version of Java SE.
How do you define market need, do you mean until some one "pay" Sun (market) directly for the x64 plugin?
There definitely not a lack of demand, http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4802695
