It would be really useful if there was a way to obtain the Java3D
version that is currently being used. Is there a way to do it? Doesn't
seem to be any special system properties- what about an api?

Use the following static lookup:

public static final Map javax.media.j3d.VirtualUniverse.getProperties();

and then map the the appropriate String from any of the keys:

"j3d.version",
"j3d.vendor",
"j3d.specification.version",
"j3d.specification.vendor" and/or
"j3d.renderer"
