Laggy and Flickery Java Applications

This question isn't directly related to Java.App development. More related to my computer and the java-version installed. But I was hoping maybe some one could give me an opinion or two.

When I first bought this labtop, right away I noticed that Java was flickery and laggy, horribly. I tried messing with a few settings, but nothing seemed to demenish the effects. The effects only occur when I move my cursor over them. I'm not sure what is causing it, not even close.

But I get the feeling that it has something to do with Nivida GeForce 4 graphics card. Reason to this belief being, when I run javaapplications.. or try to, the small oval bar (nivida contorler) that sits next to the Minimize and Maximize buttons on windows to the right, it flickers worse than the java app does when dragging my cursor over the app. Also, in worse cases my browser will crash.

I've tried reinstalling my current version of java (Java(TM) 2 Runtime Evironment, Standard Ed. 1.3.1_09-b03), 3 different times. I've even went as far as reinstalling my operating sysem. I'm stumped, and I have no idea where to fix this problem.

My Tech specs are as follows;

Windows XP Pro (Service Pack 1)
Nivida GeForce 4 Graphics card
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Evironment, Standard Ed. 1.3.1_09-b03
Internet Explorer 6.0 (I also have this problem with Mozila/Netscape)

Anyone have any idea of the best place to start looking on how to fix this? Any help or ideas would be awesome, I'm kinda bummed out about it, no idea how to fix it.
Thanks in advance.

Update your Java version to Sun 1.4.2_03.
Try update your graphics driver and read the
JRE release notes regarding display problems.
