I just started learning Java and I want to download the editor and complier.

The links take you to more links that take you to more links that don't tell you what to download.

I just want to write programs for windows to run on people's PCs and some Web applets.

What do I need to get?

Good question!

You might like to take a look at a previous post about the same question

But in the mean time, you will probably want the to grab a copy of the Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE). It comes in two flavors, the Development Kit (JDK) and the Runtime Environment (JRE).

Jump over to http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp to get the main download links. Start with the JDK, this is your most obvious starting point. Don't forget to grab a copy of the API documentation, you'll need this!!

Obviously, to write programs, you will want the Development Kit, but in order to run the programs on other machines, you most likely will only need the JRE (smaller in size).

Editors...that's more difficult. Depends on your taste. I prefer Netbeans (http://www.netbeans.org), it's free, supports many of the Java standards and extensions and is written entirly in Java it self, pretty cool.

And don't worry, once you get use to the Sun/Java site, you'll find it very useful!

Happy coding!
