having just installed the latest version of Java i thought i'd try out a simple 5 line hello world program i was shown at uni last year. When i go to the command line and type javac HelloWorld.java i get an error msg

'javac' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

This command has worked on my pc before, does anyone have any ideas why it isn't now?

Javac is a regular executable and the OS cannot find it because it is not located in a current folder. You have to modify system PATH variable to point at your JDK folder,i.e. "D:\j2sdk1.4.2_06\bin".
