Hey Ludo, I want to discuss how the Eclipse plugin deploys to SAS 8.x and what I see as a potential time saver.

I am working with a client whose direction is to move to SAS . They have several projects and I've imported them into Eclipse from their source control. Working around the other issues I've posted about, I renamed the projects and set the context roots such that WTP 1.0 invokes the ant-based XML file and deploys the apps. I've put a sun-web.xml file in each project so that I can specify the context root. After deploying a couple of the apps onto a defined server, I have a big concern.

Whenever a server is published, the plugin builds a WAR file for each app and runs the commands necessary to have the SAS deploy it. My concern is the amount of time spent in this process. I need to deploy over half a dozen web apps and if I make a change to a JSP in one of them and redeploy it, is this not going to take considerable time to get through? Using the admin console, I can specify an exploaded directory and have it deploy from there. Is this possible via the plugin to avoid all the file copying and WAR building? Granted, the docs say pointing at an exploaded directory isn't optimal for production, but I'm on a development machine and going to production will be done through other means. If I'm fine tuning some JSP's or Java classes, it seems impractical to wait on the plugin to rebuild using this scheme and having to wait to test.

The current plugin follows most of the other server plugins (oracle, jboss, jonas, websphere, bea) there.

I agree the next step if to optimize re deployment mainly for Web apps and use a directory based deployment (mechanism alsready used by the NetBeans IDE).

This is high in the todo list for this Eclipse plugin.

Cool. If you want some help testing once you have the server defs ready, give me a shout.
