I was using netbeans 5.0 alpha with jdk 6.0 build 49 and it was working correctly.
I've upgraded jdk 6 to build 50 and then 51 and now I get an error when closing netbeans.
see a screenshot here:

Seems to already be filed as

http://www.netbeans.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=64054

and apparently filed somewhere in JDK bug tracking too, but I don't know where yet.

The bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug #63254 (http://www.netbeans.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=63254) which is now marked as fixed.

Summary: It was a bug in NetBeans and it has been fixed.

With XP Pro, JDK Build 51 and Netbeans latest Q-Build (first one in September), I have the same problem as well.

By first order logic I guess it is rather a bug with the JDK than with Netbeans.

Similar happening on Linux Suse and deal with focus transfering. If you look into detail (no shown on screenshot) you would see a dump stack finishing on Component.requestFocusHelper()
