I would really like to see the bzip2 compressor natively supported in the next Java release, just as gzip is currently supported.

I so often find software distributions compressed with bzip2 these days, that I find it to be almost as popular as gzip. The new kid on the block is quite mature now.

My main reason though, is the excellent compression rates achievable.

You should check out the TrueZIP project (https://truezip.dev.java.net). It's obviously not in the JDK like you'd like, but its API is (I feel) vastly superior to the java.util.zip API. As a bonus, it has much better zip support as well as tar and bzip2.

These are not on the short list for Mustang, but we will try to increase the visibility if community fixes and interest show an increase.

Thank you for the links. It gives me some hope, although since these where at 1.3 / 1.4, I worry that they where not taken seriously.
