Browsing through the source code for the Java launcher ("bin\java.exe") I found that it searches JRE locations not only in the Registry, but that it can also run bundled JREs from the application directory.

Is this a new feature ? If so, how can I use it ?

Funny thing is, I've written my own launcher for exactly that purpose, and I'd like to use the official tool, if possible.

I found a little-documented JMV option "-jre-restrict-search" which is present since 1.4, at least.

However, it doesn't work quite as I expected. It will nevertheless prefer a public JRE installation.
