I don't doubt the usefulness of open source projects. Several valuable projects exist. One of my favorites at the moment is JXTA. Using this project in my own applications is quite rewarding. However, I can't say that it is as well documented as I'd like. Lack of documentation is a major weakness in an otherwise great product. Of course, JXTA is not alone with this particular shortcoming. You've seen the titles in the bookstore: Rock Gardening for Dummies, Needlepoint for Dummies, etc. If ever I'm tempted to pick one of them up, I quickly put it back on the shelf...and of course I could never let myself actually buy one regardless of the quality.
