This is the first time I've been to JavaPolis, and I'm having a lot of fun! First of all, I really liked this "conference in a movie theater" idea. The chairs are very comfortable, screens are big, and sound is excellent. I wish JavaOne could be like this (but given the # of people I guess it's just impossible there.) I gave a talk about Hudson on Monday night. It was a short 30 minutes slot,...

I really don't know what are JUG's structures around the world (maybe you could provide me a feedback about it) but most JUGs in Brazil face almost the same problem: Coordinators who need to spend considerable time to work for the JUG. Let's not forget that working for a JUG, according to my opinion, should be volunteer job, which means that you are aware that sometimes need to spend your time...

If you missed CommunityOne 2007, it was a great/free one day event on the day just prior to the start of JavaOne 2007 in San Francisco. Plus, you could get a free one day exhibition pass to JavaOne just by attending CommunityOne. CommunityOne 2008 should be even bigger and better than the last one and the call for participation has just gone out. The key dates are: Conference registration opens...

Tangkuban Perahu is an active volcano near Bandung, in the west part of the Java island, Indonesia. Its last eruption was in 1983, and since then, there has been warnings about possible new activity. It is a very impressive place, with high stone walls and constant steam coming out from its crater. When you bathe on the hot spring waters on the side of Tangkuban Perahu, you feel a tiny bit of the...

Recently, Bruno Souza wrote about the tour that they were doing in some Latin America cities. Unfortunately, he had to travel to Russia, but the awesome guys (Tim Boudreau Tim Jacobson, Maurício Leal and Eduardo Lima) came to visit Florianópolis, an island in the south of Brazil, and to talk about Java, Netbeans, OpenSolaris and much more... (do not miss Tim Boudreau's blog with lot of stories...

I have been upset with myself for not blogging for way too long (not that I am a particular prolific blogger by any stretch of imagination...), and I wanted to return to the blogosphere. Well, once you are away for so long, any reason is a good reason to start, and I just found one. A few hours ago I eat a bagel sandwich in Heatrow, the London airport. I always love the European sense of humor...

This was much more than just a redesign of the SDN home page. The SDN content team joined with the .SUN organization, and Sun's software marketing organization to create a model that will continue to evolve to meet the needs of both Sun's traditional developer base and new developers moving forward. On the whole, this is a positive development. However, I was disappointed by the lack of any top...

You can check online the presentations from JustJava 2007, one of the main Java events in Brazil. The event was organized by SouJava JUG. The event happened last October 3rd to October 5th. Yep. I'm heading to Prague again, this time for two weeks. Since I'll have a bit more free time than my usual whirlwind trips so I'm making an offer. In exchange to anyone who wants to buy me dinner some evening in Prague, I will answer any Swing related question you have. Here's your chance to ask anything of a Swing Hacks co-author. And if that's not enough, I'll up the stakes! To anyone...

After a long vacation, I finally had time to release the first stable release of Footprint :). The project is new and should evolve to something more sophisticated in the next few months. For now, we are proud to provide the community a simple tool to enhance the quality of JUG events or perhaps bigger or more commercial events. I hope you follow our Footprint. * The project's license is LGPL...

See my earlier blog entry about Silicon Valley Code Camp for the background material. At this point, the sessions are finalized down to the times and locations for each talk. I personally made sure that the Java sessions were all scheduled on Saturday, October 27th. Yes, it is true: FREE VOUCHERS! We from CEJUG just created a program called CEJUG Certified, that works as follows: A JUG member succeed in a Sun official certification exam. He nominates himself to be reimbursed by one of the local companies participating in the program. If there is a voucher reimbursement available, the approved member receives back the full cost of the voucher. * For the...

So, you might be wondering, what is a code camp, and what does it cost? Well, it's completely free and completely staffed by volunteers. It's a place you can share your passion for technology with others like yourself, it's a place you can give a presentation on your favorite topic to a receptive audience, as well as go to sessions by others who want to share the knowledge. Typically, there are...

Hi guys, It has been a really long time since my last post. The reason for this is partly because I didn't have much time to write, and partly because I had nothing important to write about. I have been really busy these days, and the main reason is that I was building the Bulgarian Java User Group. But let me start right at the beginning. It was probably in the middle of January, when I found...

JUG Communities represent the core of the Java universe - the first layer of organization between Java professionals, like local sport teams or that bar you used to go with your school friends. It is something glued to the roots of your society - something stable that is always there, no matter the velocity of the transformations around you. They speak your language and they share your...
