That's what I meant. Personally I can live with waiting for Linux support. But on the JavaFX.com download page you are reading the headline "Start breaking the barriers!" and next "JavaFX 1.0 is not currently supported on your operating system". I can wait, but think of people making the decisions, generally non-developers. It is quite irritating for such people to see that run-everywhere barrier-breaking Java software is not supported on one of the major operating systems.

I went to the JavaFX site, I tried to run a sample. It said I had the wrong version of Java. At that point I gave up. I suspect 99% of web users will do the same. It should at least offer me a simple way to update. I never had such problems w/Flash (as a user). Until Java makes its web distribution idiot proof.. nobody will use it. So why bother messing w/the SDK.

Any change is always viewed with some trepidation, so some of my hesitation towards JavaFX is probably natural. I remember having the same feelings toward Java eleven or twelve years ago when I was still coding in C++. I guess my main fear is that the Java language will suffer from the distraction of JavaFX. Also, when it comes to learning a new scripting languages, why would I want to bleed on an immature language when I could select one of the many other languages with more maturity that also support the JVM? I voted "already tried" but I can't say that the little demo application I built and ran really impressed me all that much. I also can't say that I have really given JavaFX a chance yet either. My main problem is that life is short and there are already so many Java frameworks and add-ons to learn about that my reading list seems to increase daily. To add yet another language on my plate at this point seems daunting, and to be realistic about this, it is unlikely that I will get around to devoting much time to learning JavaFX for quite some time (unless forced to for work or whatever). I would much rather see the Java language extend a scripting layer than have to abandon Java at this point for a new language altogether.

Not entirely open source, small amount of platform (no linux support), no installed base. It is technology that Sun should have released more than 5 years ago and before the Ajax wave. I see no future to this.

i like JavaFX and played around a while. but i'd need an working Eclipse plugin before starting real projects. i think Sun should provide such a plugin and accept the wide adoption and usage of Eclipse (compared to netbeans).

I'm truly amazed there's this much hype about JavaFX. Sure, it enables a lot of "UI prettiness", but I'm in awe of the fact that Sun is behind it so readily given the fact that it's NOT JAVA. Come on people, I understand the things that JavaFX addresses (bindings, xml-based UI, etc.), but are you really saying that those things can't be done in Java and you have to create another language to make this happen? The majority of junk JavaFX touts could be easily accomplished in the Java language, and the issues like bindings are a big deal, but something that should be resolved in Java rather than jumping to a poor alternative language that solves a few problems and creates dozens more. I'm a Java developer and want to write code in Java. It's stuff like this that makes me worried that the evils of web development (HTML, JavaScript, CSS, etc. having to be written by Java programmers) are creeping in on the desktop as well. Java is a capable language if people would use it.

I definitely wont be checking it out only because I cant as there is no LInux support which was promised.

As long as Linux isn't supported by the SDK, there isn't any chance that I will try JavaFX. My complete Java development environment is exclusively on Linux, and my company is going to move everythings else to there. No Linux, no Solaris - a really bad joke for Java software and its reputation.

I thought I was using AppletJavaWebStartAppletJavaFXSecurityConfirmationJavaFXTM? At least that's what it feels like when I check out the demo site... Maybe other people will be able to provide a nicer experience, but it's pretty jarring going there, I wasn't sure what was launching what. Once you get over that, the experience isn't so bad. I had one crash in Chrome in my only visit, but I *hope* those types of things will be ironed out pretty quickly in future java 6 updates. Long story short, I'm considering it bleeding edge right now and waiting to see how it works it way into the mainstream.
