  Well, I work in the government of a small state - a million or so people, state legislature and a dozen or so government departments. A traditional feeding ground for IBM, Oracle, M$, EDS and various local pirates, there's a vigorous push from the top to share services, align contracts, and establish whole of government directions rather than the time-honoured approach of small groups of people making things happen in their own domains.
  
  There's a message about sustainability in information systems that's a long way from getting through in this environment. Everyone's short term interests are served by maximising lock in and licence fees.
  
  People who write bad Java applications don't help, of course, and the people who come after them and say "Well, you wouldn't have that problem with EE 6 and sensible design" get short shrift.

  I would describe the situation at my company as positive and stable. Not sure why the assumption is made that it is always subject to change. I agree with another poster that this seems like a bit of a useless poll.

  I would say that this poll is totally meaningless. I guess that only java developers visit java.net. Companies with developers using other programming languages than java would not visit java.net, would they? This poll is totally biased by the java.net's community. Who cares? We all know that Java is great. And we also know that there are other programming languages which are good, too for their own purposes... I luv Java.

  far from it. It can show whether there is a tendency among Java shops to move away from the platform, or a tendency among shops that use Java only sparingly to increase that use.

  In fact pretty much every new project is fully or in part not Java, even if most of the core architecture is still Java and is likely to remain that way for the foreseeable future (the cost to rewrite it all in something else would be staggering, especially if that something else were .NET as it's all hosted on several hundred Solaris and Linux machines).

  Interesting. We're seeing more Java moving into places that used to be owned by C++ and C code. My shop is a total outlier though; we work on high-end embedded systems. .Net is for those guys down the hall who are working on mining Word docs.

  Well, people always select what they are comfortable with. Even though our *nix platform developers created a way to enhance a user interface and give the product new life with Java - all other groups slipped into the .NET mode because of the 'platform critical mass' .
  
  Here we are doing less *nix paltform stuff and of course the 'less informed' are simply following the MS roadmap - which means more .NET.

  and oh, I left my previous employer because they stopped investment in all Java ventures in favour of Progress and were seriously looking at .NET to replace those Java systems.
