J2EE > Geronimo Developer Notebook Preview
David Blevins leads a discussion on the first two chapters of the upcoming Geronimo: A Developer's Notebook. He writes " Geronimo is still young and going through many changes, which means this text may be largely different by the time it reaches its published form." These chapters "cover installing, running, and playing around with Geronimo."

Constructive criticism

Hi. I'm sure the entire community appreciates this effort (as do I). But have you (or your editor) asked yourselves who your target audience is?
1. Surely people wishing to install a pre-1.0 release of a full blown J2EE app server can deal with a GERONIMO_HOME env variable/abstract. So drop the "ha-ha #2 pencil" comments and skip the "tada-bing.wav" jokes. Would they do anything for you if you had bought this book?
2. It's a technical text - make it brief and to the point, if there's nothing to write - don't. Example, the CVS section:
Like most open source projects, Geronimo uses CVS as its code repository. CVS stands for Concurrent Version System in case you were wondering. If you were, then you should take a moment and visit www.cvshome.org to get yourself familiar with the tool. CVS is older that the hills in terms of open source software, so we are going to assume basic CVS knowledge in this section.
Don't start from Adam and Eve each time. People reading this book know what CVS is - and if not, writing ".. CVS (See www.cvshome.org for more).." is all you/whoever need.
3. I do like the way you divide the book into subsections.

I love the section titles

I love the section titles, "What just happened?" and "Why do I care?"
Is the use of the color red an artifact of the publishing process? It's a bit jarring.
Is there an extended table of contents to peek at?

The red color and all the other colors are just part of the book template. Had the chapters gone through the full production process the PDFs would be black and white with much better type setting, etc. The book will look just like the rest of the Developer's Notebooks:

The outline has changed several times and will continue to do so till Geronimo and the book are closer to completion. The fundamental vision for the book is to cover the steps required to use/deploy/manage Web components, EJB components, Connectors, Transactions and Security.
