It's a simple thing -- but it does wonders to inform management and motivate developers!
For that last 9 months I've had an
Ambient Orb connected to my
Hudson continuous integration server.

I test open source software that scales to thousands of nodes.

To my mind, there's really nothing better. Working on open source software, with a community of programmers passionate about what they're building, and getting paid to do it. Perhaps this is becoming more common for developers, but it is certainly a rare occurrence for a quality engineer, such as myself.

Today, another
early access version of
Compute Server (version 0.2) was released at a new location in the recently formed
Sun Grid Developer Community.

Testing the
Jini Technology Starter Kit is a lot of fun. It's also a lot of work.
Since version 2.0 of the starter kit (when a new plug-able implementation of the Java RMI programming model was added -- named JERI), the test matrix has really exploded!

If you're using
Compute Server and you're
not already a
test driven developer, then this blog is for you! Time to roll up your sleeves and test the Compute Server project that you've created.

The recently created
Compute Server project aims to enable Java developers to easily and efficiently use the
Sun Grid Compute Utility as a platform for the distributed execution of parallel jobs. The following diagram describes currently "
How It Works" from 50,000 feet.

What makes distributed computing so darn hard? Well, to start with, so much can go wrong. Networks change. Network speeds fluctuate. Networks fail. Nodes fail. And more. Are you testing all these scenarios?

It's a great day! It was just
announced that the
Sun Grid Compute Utility is open to the public.
As a software quality engineer for a number of advanced technologies for distributed systems, I can't think of a better test bed for qualifying my distributed applications!
